Down's Syndrome Jersey Group
Down's Syndrome Jersey Group are a charity based in the Channel Islands that advocates for people with Down's Syndrome to attain their potential. The group recognised that there were many outdated and inaccurate stereotypes still widely associated with Down's Syndrome, and they wanted to work on an awareness campaign to address these misconceptions. To do this, they collected a series of testimonials from individuals and their families in Jersey. The individuals ranged from newborns through to adults, and represented all life stages. Down's Syndrome Jersey Group required accessible formats to bring these stories to life.

This awareness campaign needed to avoid generalisations and present the stories as deeply personal and individual. We created the strapline 'This is me' for the project. I created a lock up which ran the words disruptively through 'Down's Syndrome' in their name, to highlight the importance of seeing the person behind the condition. The stories were comprised of written testimonials, recorded interviews, and photos, used with the permission of the individual or their families. It was important for these stories to feel uncensored and authentic, and for this reason we wanted to avoid heavy editing. The layout therefore needed to flex to accommodate different lengths, types and quality of content. Using a 'scrapbook' style for the page designs retained a personal feel to each of the stories and accommodated different types of material.
